Quebec fall itinerary: 7 days chasing peak foliage
Quebec in autumn is the rare destination where the landscape experience genuinely matches — even exceeds — the tourist brochure promises. The combination of vast sugar maple forests, the dramatic topography of the Laurentians and the Charlevoix crater, the steep river valleys, and the 600-kilometre procession from early colour in the northern highlands to late colour on the St. Lawrence coast creates a three-week window where you can chase peak foliage across the province. This 7-day itinerary is built specifically to do that — timed for late September to early October with a route that deliberately crosses the colour gradient rather than fighting it.
This guide assumes a week in the last days of September through the second week of October, with a base rental car from Montreal. For the classic non-seasonal itinerary, see Quebec 7-day itinerary.
Timing — the single most important decision
Quebec’s peak foliage window runs from late September to mid-October, with regional staggering:
- Northern highlands (Grands-Jardins plateau, Chic-Chocs): peak September 22 to October 1.
- Middle latitudes (Eastern Townships, Laurentians, Charlevoix inland): peak September 28 to October 8.
- St. Lawrence coastal strip (coastal Charlevoix, Bas-Saint-Laurent): peak October 5 to October 12.
- Southern extreme (Montreal, Montérégie, Eastern Townships lowlands): peak October 5 to October 15.
Target arrival date: the last weekend of September through the first week of October is the safest bet for catching near-peak colour somewhere in the province.
Tracking tool: Sépaq publishes weekly regional colour updates. Tourisme Quebec also maintains a foliage tracker.
The itinerary structure
This week intentionally moves from early-peaking northern parks to late-peaking southern country, following the colour gradient in reverse direction so you’re always arriving into near-peak.
- Days 1-2: Laurentians (north of Montreal)
- Days 3-4: Quebec City + Charlevoix
- Day 5: Hautes-Gorges (peak highlands viewpoint)

Photography notes

- Key photo stops:
- Acropole des Draveurs summit (if you hiked).
- Route 362 coastal turnouts (especially Port-au-Persil and Cap-à-l’Aigle).
- Mont-Tremblant panoramic gondola top.
- Île d’Orléans south shore (looking toward the Montmorency Falls and Laurentian fall hillsides).
- Cantons-de-l’Est vineyards with forested hillsides behind.
Where to stay
Prices are 30-50% above summer for peak fall weekends. Book at least 3 months ahead for the last weekend of September and first weekend of October. Thanksgiving weekend (second weekend of October) is the busiest domestic tourism weekend.
Adapting the itinerary
- 5-day version: drop Laurentians (Days 1-2), start in Quebec City on Day 1.
- 10-day version: add 2 nights in Gaspésie (Forillon, Parc de la Gaspésie peak colour early October).
- Winter alternative: see Quebec winter 7-day itinerary.
Practical tips
- Weather: 5-15°C daytime, 0-5°C overnight; frost possible after October 5. Pack layers and rain gear.
- Reservations: Sépaq park reservations strongly recommended for peak weeks (Hautes-Gorges boat tour, Mont-Tremblant Pic Johannsen trailhead).
- Avoid: Thanksgiving weekend (Canadian) without a firm plan — everything is fully booked.
- Pair with: Charlevoix fall foliage, Eastern Townships fall foliage, Best time to visit Quebec.
