Salt Spring Island is the largest, liveliest, and most-visited of the Southern Gulf Islands. For the last fifty years it has been a magnet for artists, artisans, small farmers, cheese makers, and anyone seeking a slower version of BC life. The result is an island where the Saturday Market is a regional event, open studios dot the back roads, and a working farm economy produces some of the finest cheese, lamb, wine, and cider in British Columbia.

At 182 square kilometres, Salt Spring is big enough to reward several days of exploration and small enough to cross by car in 45 minutes. It sits 30 minutes by ferry from Swartz Bay near Victoria, 90 minutes from Tsawwassen south of Vancouver, or 25 minutes from Crofton north of Duncan on Vancouver Island. For travellers based in Victoria or Vancouver, it makes an outstanding weekend trip.

Salt Spring Saturday Market

The Saturday Market in Ganges runs every Saturday from April to late October in Centennial Park beside the harbour. It is one of the largest and most important outdoor markets in BC, drawing around 140 vendors and thousands of visitors on summer weekends. The rule is strict: everything sold at the market must be made, baked, grown, or caught by the vendor themselves. There is no imported merchandise, no resale, no mass-produced goods.

This produces an unusual concentration of Salt Spring’s creative economy in one place. Artisan cheese makers, organic vegetable farms, lavender growers, potters, jewellers, painters, leather workers, bakers, honey producers, and salmon smokers all hold stalls. Live music plays throughout. Arrive before 10 am for the best selection and the easiest parking. Most vendors accept debit cards, but bring cash for smaller makers.

A Tuesday Market runs in smaller form from June through September at the same location.

Artisan studios and the Studio Tour

Roughly 35 studios across the island are open to visitors, many through the Salt Spring Studio Tour — a self-drive route identified by blue-sheep signs. The tour covers potters, glass blowers, painters, sculptors, weavers, and jewellers. Pick up a current tour map at the visitor centre in Ganges or download one online before arriving.

Notable stops include Salt Spring Island Cheese Company, where you can watch artisan chèvre being made and taste a flight with house preserves in the farm’s tasting room; Kings Lane Recording and the island’s small music scene; and Blue Heron Gallery for contemporary Salt Spring painters.

Food and drink

Salt Spring’s food scene operates at a level disproportionate to its size. Salt Spring Island Cheese Company on Reynolds Road produces the celebrated chèvres (plain, savory, and sweet) that are sold at Whole Foods across BC. Moonstruck Organic Cheese on Beddis Road makes aged cow’s milk cheeses including the award-winning Blossom’s Blue. Salt Spring Kitchen Company produces small-batch preserves, chutneys, and mustards sold island-wide.

Salt Spring Island Wild Cider operates a tasting room in a 1900s farmhouse and produces some of the best traditional cider in BC. Salt Spring Vineyards and Garry Oaks Winery offer tasting rooms set amid vineyards planted in the island’s favourable microclimate. Salt Spring Ales (at Saltspring Brewing on Rainbow Road) is the island’s craft brewery.

For meals, Tree House Cafe in Ganges serves wood-fired pizzas under an enormous plum tree with live music most evenings. Morningside Organic Bakery in Fulford Harbour is a legendary breakfast stop serving freshly milled grain breakfasts. House Piccolo in Ganges is the island’s long-standing fine dining address, run by Finnish chef Piccolo Lyytikäinen since the 1990s.

Outdoor activities

Ruckle Provincial Park at the island’s southeast corner is one of the best coastal parks in the Gulf Islands. Former farmland still grazed by sheep descends to rocky headlands and small beaches with spectacular views of North Pender Island and the Trincomali Channel. The park has extensive walk-in camping along the shoreline — genuinely one of the best camping experiences in the Gulf Islands, though sites must be reserved in summer.

Mount Maxwell Provincial Park occupies the highest point on Salt Spring at 595 metres. The drive to the summit (4 km of rough gravel from Cranberry Road) ends at a cliff-edge viewpoint with panoramic views over the entire Salish Sea — the Olympic Mountains to the south, Mount Baker to the east, Vancouver Island to the west. The Baynes Peak Trail can also be hiked from the parking area.

Mount Erskine (441 m) offers a shorter, steeper hike through Garry oak forest with views of Trincomali Channel. The Fairy Door Trail on the way up is a whimsical tradition — dozens of tiny doors set into tree trunks create a small folkloric scene that delights children.

Kayaking from Ganges Harbour or Fulford Harbour offers sheltered paddling with a reasonable chance of seeing seals, river otters, and eagles. Island Escapades and Salt Spring Adventure Co. are the two established rental and tour operators.

Beaches and swimming

Salt Spring has several excellent swimming beaches. St. Mary Lake on the north end of the island is a warm freshwater lake ringed with resorts and cottages — easily the warmest swimming water accessible to Victoria-area travellers. Cusheon Lake near Ganges is smaller and quieter. Vesuvius Bay is the best saltwater beach, with a long south-facing gravel shore that warms well in summer.

Beddis Beach and Drummond Park offer sheltered small beaches close to Ganges.

Where to stay on Salt Spring Island

Accommodation ranges from self-contained ocean-front cottages to full-service resorts and heritage bed-and-breakfasts. Hastings House Country House Hotel in Ganges is the island’s most refined property — a heritage manor on Ganges Harbour with a Relais & Châteaux pedigree and one of BC’s finest dining rooms. Salt Spring Spa Resort on St. Mary Lake combines spa amenities with lake access and family-friendly facilities.

For mid-range options, Harbour House Hotel in Ganges is centrally located with walking access to the market and restaurants. The island has a strong bed-and-breakfast tradition and dozens of vacation rentals; book early for July, August, and the Saturday Market weekends.

Getting around Salt Spring

A car is the practical way to explore beyond Ganges. The island has no public transit worth planning around. Ferry services arrive at three terminals: Long Harbour (from Tsawwassen), Fulford Harbour (from Swartz Bay), and Vesuvius Bay (from Crofton). Bringing a vehicle across is straightforward with reservations — book ahead for summer weekends via BC Ferries.

Cyclists can comfortably tour the island, though the terrain is hillier than most Gulf Islands. Bike rentals are available at Ganges.

Connecting Salt Spring with the rest of the Gulf Islands

Salt Spring is easily combined with Galiano Island, Pender Island, or Mayne Island via inter-island ferry services for a multi-day Gulf Islands trip. See the Gulf Islands overview for regional planning.

Frequently asked questions about Salt Spring Island

From Tsawwassen Ferry Terminal south of Vancouver, take the direct BC Ferries service to Long Harbour on Salt Spring (90 minutes). Sailings typically run two to four times daily in summer. Reserve in advance. Alternatively, ferry to Victoria and drive to Swartz Bay, then ferry across to Fulford Harbour (30 minutes).

When is the Saturday Market open?

Is Salt Spring Island expensive?

Moderately so. Accommodation prices rise significantly in July and August, when waterfront properties can exceed CAD $500 per night. Shoulder seasons (April-June, September-October) offer much better value. Meals, wine, and artisan goods reflect the premium quality on offer but are not outrageous by Gulf Islands standards.

How many days should I spend on Salt Spring Island?

Is Salt Spring kid-friendly?

Very. St. Mary Lake beaches, Ruckle Park, the fairy doors on Mount Erskine, farm visits, and the Saturday Market all engage children well. Several accommodations are explicitly family-oriented.
