Toronto Pearson International Airport (YYZ) is Canada’s busiest airport and the arrival point for the vast majority of international visitors to Ontario. The airport sits about 25 kilometres northwest of downtown Toronto in Mississauga. The transfer into the city is one of the most commonly asked questions by visitors to Toronto — and the good news is that the options are clear, the costs are predictable, and the logistics are manageable.
The best option depends on your circumstances: number of people, amount of luggage, time of day, and budget. This guide covers all the transfer methods with honest assessments of each.
Option 1: UP Express (Union Pearson Express) — recommended
The Union Pearson Express (UP Express) is a dedicated rail link connecting Toronto Pearson Airport directly to Union Station in downtown Toronto. It is the fastest, most reliable, and most comfortable option for most travellers arriving or departing without excessive luggage and travelling alone or with one companion.
Key facts:
- Journey time: 25 minutes from Pearson to Union Station (or reverse)
- Frequency: Every 15 minutes, 5:27am to 1:03am
- Fare (2024/2025): Approximately CAD $12.35 with a PRESTO card; CAD $30.25 without (cash/credit card at the machine)
- Departures: From the Link station at Pearson (connected to Terminal 1 by automated People Mover; accessible from Terminal 3 by shuttle bus or the People Mover system)
- Baggage: Ample overhead and rack space; there is no baggage fee or size restriction
Why choose the UP Express:
- Fixed 25-minute journey regardless of traffic — no surge pricing, no rush-hour delays
- Air-conditioned modern trains with power outlets and WiFi
- Arrives at Union Station — the hub of the TTC subway, GO Transit, and VIA Rail, putting you within subway reach of any downtown hotel
- Significantly cheaper than a taxi for solo or paired travellers
Why you might not choose it:
- If your hotel is far from a TTC station, you will need a second transit connection or taxi from Union Station
- With significant luggage (large families, extended stays), the transitions between the airport People Mover, the train, and then the subway can be cumbersome
- Not available for all destinations outside downtown
Buying UP Express tickets: Tickets can be purchased at machines in both terminal link stations, on the UP Express app, or with a PRESTO card (load the card at any TTC station or online before your trip). The fare is the same in either direction — useful to know for return journeys.
From Union Station: Once at Union Station, the TTC subway Line 1 (Yonge-University) takes you north to the ROM (Museum station), Yorkville (Bay station), Bloor Street (Bloor-Yonge), and elsewhere. The subway is accessible from the Union Station concourse level.
Browse Toronto tours and experiences — book from downtown after arrivalOption 2: Taxi or rideshare (Uber/Lyft)
Taxis are available at designated taxi stands at the arrivals level of both Terminal 1 and Terminal 3 at Pearson. Taxi stands are well-signed and staffed by dispatch personnel who manage the queue.
Uber and Lyft pick up from designated rideshare areas at Pearson — in Terminal 1 on Level 1, and in Terminal 3 on Level 1 as well. Follow the airport signage for rideshare pickup; it is distinct from the taxi stand and from the general arrivals area.
Typical costs:
- Taxi: Fixed rate of approximately CAD $53–57 from Pearson to downtown Toronto (most taxi companies operate a flat-rate fare for the airport-downtown corridor — confirm before getting in)
- Uber/Lyft: CAD $50–75 in standard conditions; can rise to CAD $80–120+ during surge pricing (peak arrival times, bad weather, late night)
- Journey time: 25–35 minutes in off-peak traffic; 45–70 minutes during rush hour (7–9am and 4–7pm weekdays); longer during severe winter weather or major events
When to choose taxi/rideshare:
- Travelling with a family and significant luggage (door-to-door service with no transfers)
- Arriving at an address outside the downtown core not well-served by TTC
- Arriving at night with heavy baggage and no energy for transit connections
- Group of 3–4 people splitting the cost (per-person cost approaches UP Express rates at 4 people)
Tips:
- Always confirm the flat rate with a taxi driver before getting in — not all drivers quote the flat rate automatically
- Check Uber pricing before booking; if surge pricing is significant, the taxi flat rate may be competitive
- Have your destination address ready in both cases
Option 3: TTC bus (most economical)
The TTC bus route 52 Lawrence West and 900 Airport Express bus services connect Pearson Airport to the TTC subway network, providing the most economical option for budget-conscious travellers.
Route 52 Lawrence West: Connects the airport to Lawrence West Station on the Spadina (Line 1) subway line. TTC fare applies (approximately CAD $3.30 with PRESTO). Journey to Lawrence West Station is approximately 30 minutes; from there, the subway takes you downtown in another 15–20 minutes. Total journey time approximately 60–75 minutes.
Route 900 Airport Express: A premium TTC express bus connecting the airport to Kipling Station (Line 2 Bloor-Danforth) and Yorkdale Shopping Centre (Line 1). TTC fare plus a premium surcharge applies. Journey to Kipling Station approximately 20 minutes; subway from Kipling to downtown approximately 30 minutes. Total approximately 60 minutes.
When to choose the TTC bus:
- Budget is the primary consideration
- You have a PRESTO card and are comfortable with transit connections
- Light luggage only
- Not arriving during extreme cold or extreme heat where outdoor waits are uncomfortable
Note: The TTC bus options require patience with connections and are not practical for all travellers. The UP Express is significantly faster and more comfortable for a modest additional cost.
Option 4: Rental car
Rental car desks are located in the Consolidated Rental Car facility connected to both terminals by automated People Mover. All major rental companies (Enterprise, Avis, Budget, Hertz, National, Thrifty, Alamo) operate from this facility.
When to rent a car at the airport:
- Your Toronto visit includes day trips to destinations best reached by car (Niagara Falls, Muskoka, the Scarborough Bluffs, Prince Edward County)
- You are arriving and driving directly to a destination outside Toronto rather than to the city itself
Strongly not recommended: Renting a car for a Toronto-only stay. Parking downtown costs CAD $20–40 per day minimum, traffic is significant, and every tourist attraction is accessible by TTC. Keep the car at the airport hotel if you need it for a day trip, or rent only for the day-trip days.
Driving from Pearson to downtown: Take Highway 427 south to the Gardiner Expressway east, then follow the Gardiner to your downtown exit. In off-peak traffic the drive takes 20–30 minutes. In rush hour (particularly the Gardiner eastbound in the morning) allow 45–75 minutes.
Option 5: Hotel shuttle
Some airport-area hotels operate complimentary shuttles to/from Pearson. For visitors staying downtown rather than near the airport, hotel shuttles are generally not useful unless the hotel specifically offers them.
If your hotel does offer an airport shuttle, confirm pickup timing and check availability for your arrival time — shuttle frequency is limited compared to the UP Express.
Which option is right for you?
| Situation | Recommended option |
|---|---|
| Solo traveller, light luggage | UP Express |
| Couple, moderate luggage | UP Express |
| Family with children and bags | Taxi or rideshare |
| Budget traveller, flexible on time | TTC bus |
| Late night arrival, tired | Taxi or rideshare |
| Renting a car for day trips | Rental car |
| Group of 4+ splitting cost | Taxi or rideshare |
Toronto Billy Bishop City Airport
A second airport serves Toronto: Billy Bishop Toronto City Airport (YTZ) on the Toronto Islands waterfront, a 2-minute ferry ride from the mainland adjacent to the Harbourfront district. Billy Bishop serves primarily domestic routes (Air Canada and Porter Airlines) and is significantly closer to downtown than Pearson.
From Billy Bishop, the ferry to the mainland takes 2 minutes. From there, a free shuttle bus connects to the Harbourfront area and Raft Quay, from which downtown hotels are accessible on foot or by short taxi.
From Billy Bishop to downtown: 10–15 minutes total, including ferry and walk or taxi. A taxi from the ferry landing to most downtown hotels costs CAD $10–15.
If you have the option of flying into Billy Bishop rather than Pearson, the proximity advantage is significant — particularly for business travellers staying in the downtown core.
Practical tips for the airport transfer
Schedule: The UP Express runs until 1:03am, which covers most arrival times. For very late-night arrivals (after 1am), a taxi or rideshare is the only option other than waiting for the first morning UP Express.
Winter weather: During significant snowstorms, road-based options (taxi, rideshare, rental car) are slower and more expensive due to traffic. The UP Express runs on a dedicated rail line and is significantly less affected by road conditions — it is the most weather-reliable option.
Terminal location: Pearson has two passenger terminals — Terminal 1 (Air Canada, Star Alliance carriers) and Terminal 3 (Porter Airlines at YTZ note: Porter mainly uses Billy Bishop; most international carriers at T3 are other alliances). The UP Express Link station is connected to Terminal 1 directly via People Mover; from Terminal 3, use the free airport shuttle bus to reach the Link station.
Arriving very early: The UP Express starts at 5:27am. For arrivals before 5:27am, a taxi or rideshare is the only option.
Travelling to Toronto with accessible needs
Toronto Pearson Airport is fully accessible, with elevator access throughout Terminal 1 and Terminal 3, accessible washrooms, and airport staff assistance available on request. The UP Express trains are fully accessible with level boarding at the Pearson Link station and at Union Station. Accessibility information is available through the UP Express website and the Pearson Airport passenger assistance desk.
The TTC subway at Union Station has elevator access from the UP Express level to the subway platforms, though some stations along the Line 1 route are not elevator-accessible — plan your onward journey with the TTC accessibility map if required. Major stations including Bloor-Yonge, Museum, Spadina, and St. George are all accessible.
Taxis and rideshares can accommodate most mobility needs; accessible taxi service (wheel-chair accessible vans) is available at the airport accessible vehicle queue at both terminals. Book accessible vehicles through the Beck Taxi or Co-op Cabs accessible vehicle dispatch if needed for a specific time.
What to do at Pearson Airport while waiting
If you have time to fill at Pearson between arrival and your UP Express or ground transport, the airport has several worthwhile options.
Terminal 1 has an extensive Dining and Retail level accessible from both the international and domestic arrivals areas. Notable: Tim Hortons (the essential Canadian experience), Terroni (one of Toronto’s most popular Italian restaurants with a full airport outpost), and Montecito (a full-service restaurant with Canadian food and Ontario wines).
The airport art program at Pearson commissions and displays a rotating selection of Canadian visual art throughout the terminals. The Terminal 1 post-security area has a particularly strong installation collection including works by prominent Canadian artists.
Currency exchange: Available at multiple locations in both terminals. Exchange rates at airport currency counters are significantly less favourable than using a bank ATM — use the ATMs (marked with Canadian banking logos — BMO, TD, RBC, Scotiabank) in the arrivals area for cash at the best available rate.
SIM cards and connectivity: Several kiosks in Terminal 1 and 3 sell Canadian SIM cards. For visitors from non-roaming countries, buying a temporary Canadian SIM (Fido, Public Mobile, or Koodo are all available) is the most economical way to have reliable data during your Ontario stay.
Ground transport apps and pre-booking
For rideshare services, downloading and setting up the Uber or Lyft app before you arrive in Canada saves time at the airport — you will need a payment method linked before your first ride request.
GO Transit is bookable through the Triplinx app or directly at the station for those taking regional rail services from Union Station. The UP Express does not require advance booking — tap your PRESTO card or buy at the terminal machine.
For those booking a guided transfer service (private car with driver), several Toronto companies offer fixed-rate airport transfer services bookable online — prices are typically CAD $60–90 for a sedan, more for SUV or van vehicles. These are worth considering for groups of 3–4 people or for late-night arrivals when the premium is worth the convenience.
