The Outaouais is the Quebec region directly across the Ottawa River from the nation’s capital, and it is one of the most under-utilised day-trip regions in Canada. International travellers who fly into Ottawa or drive through on a cross-country itinerary often spend two or three days on the Ontario side without ever crossing the bridge to Gatineau — missing one of Canada’s best regional parks, the continent’s largest spa, a genuinely excellent national museum, a drive-through wildlife park, and a covered-bridge village that feels like rural Quebec a century ago, all within an hour’s drive of Parliament Hill.
This guide frames the Outaouais as an Ottawa extension. It covers the half-day to 3-day options, with drive times and how to sequence visits for different traveller profiles.
Geography: what “Outaouais” means
The Outaouais is Quebec’s capital region, directly opposite Ottawa across the river of the same name. The principal city — Gatineau — is effectively part of the Ottawa urban area, with five bridges linking the two sides. Beyond Gatineau, the region extends north into the Laurentian foothills and east along the Ottawa River toward Montebello.
For most Ottawa-based travellers, “going to the Outaouais” means one of four types of trip:
- Urban Gatineau (5-15 min from downtown Ottawa): museums, restaurants, Old Hull.
- Gatineau Park (15-30 min): hiking, lakes, fall foliage, cross-country skiing.
- Wakefield-Chelsea-La Pêche corridor (30-45 min): villages, Nordik Spa, covered bridges.
- Ottawa River east toward Montebello (45-90 min): Parc Omega, Fairmont Château Montebello.
Half-day trips (3-4 hours)
Canadian Museum of History
The museum on the Gatineau waterfront is arguably Ottawa’s best museum despite being on the Quebec side. The Grand Hall’s collection of totem poles and First Peoples art is genuinely world-class; the Canadian History Hall on the upper floors is the most ambitious attempt at a national history exhibit in Canada. The building itself, by architect Douglas Cardinal, is also architecturally significant.
- Admission: ~$21 adult.
- Time: allow 3-4 hours minimum.
- Access: 15-minute walk across the Alexandra Bridge from the National Gallery. See Canadian Museum of History.
Gatineau Park — Champlain Lookout half-day
The Champlain Lookout in Parc de la Gatineau is only 20 minutes from Parliament Hill and delivers a panoramic Ottawa Valley view that rivals any urban viewpoint in Canada. Drive up, walk the rim trail (10 min), return via the King Mountain or Pink Lake lookouts.
- Time: 2-3 hours round trip.
- Season: early October weekends see peak foliage crowds — arrive by 9am. See Parc de la Gatineau for detailed planning.
Old Hull + microbreweries
The Vieux-Hull neighbourhood immediately across the Portage Bridge has a concentrated cluster of microbreweries and restaurants that operate on different liquor hours than Ontario — long a draw for Ottawa night-outs. Les Brasseurs du Temps on Rue Aubry is a solid lunch or afternoon stop.
Full-day trips (6-8 hours)
Parc de la Gatineau — full hiking day
- Drive up early; hit King Mountain or Wolf Trail (longer, dramatic cliff views).
- Swim at Meech Lake or Lac Philippe beaches in summer.
- Lunch at Les Fougères in Chelsea (one of the region’s best restaurants; reservations essential).
- Return via the Pink Lake viewpoint.
Wakefield village + Nordik Spa
- Drive 30 minutes north to Wakefield village — the covered bridge, the Black Sheep Inn music venue, the steam train (seasonal).
- Lunch at Café Molo or the Black Sheep.
- Afternoon: 3-4 hours at Nordik Spa-Nature in Chelsea on the return — North America’s largest spa, with Nordic thermal baths, saunas and massage (~$90 entry adult). See Nordik Spa.
Parc Omega drive-through safari
- 1h15 drive east along the Ottawa River to Montebello.
- Spend 3-4 hours at Parc Omega (bison, elk, bears, wolves).
- Lunch at the on-site restaurant or Château Montebello.
- Return via Route 148 along the river, with stops at Plaisance for birdwatching if in migration season.
See Parc Omega.

Ski weekend (winter)
- Cross-country skiing: Parc de la Gatineau has 200 km of groomed trails. The Camp Fortune area adds alpine skiing.
- Edelweiss and Vorlage alpine areas (Wakefield area).
- Nordik Spa evenings — the outdoor pools in winter are exceptional.
Getting around
- Crossings: five bridges link Ottawa to Gatineau. The Portage Bridge and Alexandra Bridge connect downtown to Old Hull; the Macdonald-Cartier is the main autoroute link.
- Bus: STO (Société de transport de l’Outaouais) buses connect central Ottawa to downtown Gatineau, but do not serve Gatineau Park or Wakefield. For most day trips a car is essential.
- Taxi/Uber: crosses the bridge routinely. Plan 15-30 minutes to Gatineau Park, longer to Wakefield.
Where to stay
Most visitors base in Ottawa and day-trip to the Outaouais. If you prefer a Quebec-side base:
- Hotel-Casino Lac-Leamy (Gatineau): large hotel, spa, casino; 5 min from downtown Ottawa.
- Le Nordik Lodge (Chelsea): spa-adjacent accommodation.
- Wakefield B&Bs: Auberge Wakefield Mill is the upmarket choice.
- Fairmont Château Montebello: the iconic log hotel for Parc Omega itineraries.
Practical tips
- Language: French is primary. English is widely spoken in tourism settings — service with a smile in either language is the norm.
- Tipping: same as Ontario (15-20%).
- Provincial health insurance: in the rare event of a medical issue, most Ontario cards are accepted across the border for urgent care.
- Rental car: essential for anything beyond urban Gatineau. Ottawa airport rentals cross provincial lines without restrictions.
- Pair with: Quebec City via the Route 148 / Trois-Rivières scenic drive for a broader Quebec itinerary.
